FROM BEING BRICKLAYER, CARWASHER TO BECOMING BOLO HOUSE’S GREATEST SONGSTER

By Thabo Raphotle

As an emergent artist, while battling for recognition as Bolo House Music’s singer-producer, Dr Skaro used to work as a bricklayer and car-washer to make ends meet.

Today—almost a decade later— the 24-year-old musician is ultimately reaping off what he had worked hard for: He is one of the biggest forces in the genre. Skaro’s massive viral hits Ae Enough, Ae Zowe, and  Kao Nyaka are—by far— the bestest projects the Lenyenye-born songster has ever put out.

“It was not easy,” said Skaro. “I am so grateful because I have been fighting for recognition for a while now.”

While in high school, said Dr Skaro, his excessive love for music has always put him in big trouble with his educators. In April, Bolobedu’s podcaster and Tik Tok star, Appreciate Makhubele, interviewed Ae Enough hitmaker on his podcast, One Awa Show With Us.

In the episode, Dr Skaro— who is signed to Herbal 3 Records, Lil Meri’s former label— told Appreciate that “I was always in trouble with the teachers because I used to fail a lot, especially in grade 12. I was worse! I loved music more than I loved school.”

Born Karabo Modikwa, Dr Skaro’s popularity skyrocketed in 2022 following Ae Zowi, a successful raunchy track the singer-producer released with award-winning Bolo House superstar, Prince Benza.

Evidently, his latest 2023 hit, Ae Enough, the Bolo House award-winning duo Rise Teanet and Prince Benza-assisted single is one of Bolobedu’s prominent records this year. Released in April, the nearly five-minute-long indelible smash hit has already been played over ten thousand times on YouTube.

Ae Enough is the first authentic Bolo House single—which tells the story of the difficulty of teenage parenthood with raw honesty. Whilst he does not sing from his personal experience, Dr Skaro said the heart-wrenching track was influenced by the experiences of people around him.

Questioned whom Perfect Radio should interview next, as part of the Youth Empowerment Initiative, Dr Skaro recommended Nunu hitmakers, Rise Teanet. “Those guys are pushing [very hard.]”
