40 YEAR-OLD STEPFATHER GETS LIFE SENTENCE FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT OF TEEN GIRLS

LIMPOPO | A 40 year-old man from Veninyao Village in Dennilton was found guilty and sentenced to life sentence for raping a 15 year-old and additional 8 years for sexual assault by the Groblersdal Regional Court. The accused’s name was undisclosed to protect the identity of the victim and to avoid re-victimisation. The Court also declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm and to work with children.

According to the information received from National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Limpopo Division Regional spokesperson ,Mashudu Malabi ,the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the state led evidence of witnesses testified that the accused and the victim’s mother were in a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend.

During the sentencing phase, State Prosecutor Raesibe Sharon Malatji presented a victim impact report, prepared by social worker worker Tebogo Chauke, alongside a pre-sentence report.

The reports highlighted the severe psychological and emotional trauma experienced by both the victims ,with one victim forced to drop out of school and live in constant fear of further harm.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the sentence emphasizing their commitment to stand firm against gender-based violence and protecting women and children. They further praised the prosecution and other stakeholders involved in achieving these outcomes.
