GA-MATLALA : The Police in Matlala have opened an inquest docket after a nine-year-old boy drowned at Madietane village on Thursday, 08 January 2026, at approximately 13h40.
The Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says the police were alerted to the incident and immediately responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found community members gathered near a river, where the body of the child was pointed out. Emergency Medical Services were summoned and certified the child deceased at the scene.
The deceased was positively identified by the next of kin.
Preliminary information indicates that the child was swimming in the river with other children prior to the incident. The exact circumstances surrounding the drowning are still under investigation.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and urged parents and guardians to closely supervise children, particularly around rivers and other water sources.
Police investigations are continuing.
