PHALABORWA | The second day of the Campus Community Safety Forum launch was successfully held on Tuesday, 31 March 2026 at the Phalaborwa Main Campus of Mopani TVET College. The event brought together key stakeholders from government, law enforcement, education, and student leadership, all united in promoting safety and crime prevention within the campus environment.
The event commenced with a scripture reading led by Reverend MH Maluleke, which set a reflective and purposeful tone. This was followed by opening and welcoming remarks delivered by the Acting Mayor of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, Cllr T Nkuna, who emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in ensuring community and campus safety.
The purpose of the day was clearly outlined by Major General TN Mathonsi, Head of Social Crime Prevention, who highlighted the significance of strengthening partnerships between the police, the institution, and the broader community to combat crime.
The Principal of Mopani TVET College, Dr ML Baloyi, reinforced the institution’s commitment to providing a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff.
A comprehensive campus safety overview was presented by Dr M Phalane-Maisela from the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service, providing insight into current safety measures and strategies to enhance security on campus.
Representatives from the Provincial Community Police Forum (CPF) Board, the Provincial Youth Crime Prevention Structure and Mopani TVET College SRC President, Mr T Chiloane delivered messages of support. They encouraged students to work together to fight crime and ensure that the campus remains safe for everyone.
The Acting Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Cllr BA Shivambu, formally introduced the Deputy Minister of Police, Dr SP Boshielo, MP, who gave the keynote address in underscoring the critical role of partnerships between South African Police Service (SAPS), educational institutions, and students in addressing crime and fostering safer communities.
A major highlight of the event was the official launch of the Campus Community Safety Forum and the signing of a pledge between the South African Police Service and student representatives. This pledge symbolizes a united commitment to fight crime, promote safety, and encourage active participation of students in crime prevention initiatives.
The launch and pledge signing were witnessed by Deputy Ministers, the Executive Management of Mopani TVET College, and top management of SAPS, marking a significant step towards strengthening institutional safety frameworks.
The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General JP Scheepers, expressed appreciation to all stakeholders for their contributions and commitment.
This successful event reflects a strong partnership between government, law enforcement, and the academic community, reinforcing a shared vision of a safe and secure campus for all.
