The residents of Ga-Maphalle in the Greater Letaba Municipality are protesting to highlight critical issues affecting their community. The protest started in the early hours of this morning, with residents blocking the R81 road at Maphalle village.
Public order policing is monitoring the situation and has fired rubber bullets to disperse the masses. Community members are still gathering, demanding answers.
In their memorandum of demands, the community members are demanding immediate attention to the following:
1. Water Crisis – Pipa village has been without a reliable water supply for years, violating their constitutional right to basic necessities. They demand sustainable water infrastructure.
2. Crime and Safety – Inadequate police presence and response to reported cases have created a crime hotspot. They demand increased police visibility and serious attention to community cases.
3. Load shedding Impact – Continuous load reduction without a clear timeline is crippling their community. They demand a revised schedule and alternative energy solutions.
4. Clinic Services – The clinic’s 24/7 operation is crucial. They demand uninterrupted services and adequate staffing.
5. Employment Opportunities – Unfair hiring practices are depriving locals of job opportunities. They demand transparent and equitable employment processes.
6. Road Safety: The current road layout is prone to accidents. They demand alterations to improve safety.
The community members say they are waiting for the Mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality to address these demands urgently and provide support for affected community members.
