NQOBO SAMKELO WINS MOPANI DISTRICT SAPS JUNIOR COMMISSIONER

GA-KGAPANE – The South African Police Service in Mopani District has announced a 15 year-old Nqobo Samkelo as the winner of the Mopani District SAPS Junior commissioner. The competition which took place on Thursday, 12 February 2026 at Bolobedu SAPS, Ga-Kgapane.
The Junior District Commissioners take part in a debate and public speaking competition. Key topics included Gender Based Violence and Femicide challenges facing the teaching and learning environment, with a view to devising solutions to these problems.
The announcement of four Junior Deputy District Commissioners, which is a reflection of the SAPS management structure was also made.
The new junior leadership team. Mohale Palesa was named the Head of Mopani Services, while Mohlala Karabo took the role of Support Head. Mofokeng Oratilwe was appointed as the Junior Detective Commissioner, and Fuela Randzo became the Junior Visible Commander.
Nqobo Samkelo was initially named the District Commissioner, the position was then transferred to Mokgalaka Lethabo as Nqobo is in Grade 10, and the project specifically targets Grade 8 and 9 learners.
​The event was successful, supported by a large turnout of parents , police officers and teachers who celebrated the learners’ achievements. The top five representatives will now move forward to represent the Mopani District at the Provincial level, with the potential to compete nationally.
The Junior Commissioner Project was first piloted in the SAPS in 2011, in the provinces of Free State and Limpopo. Currently, the project runs in all nine provinces
The Mopani District Commissioner of Police Major General SW Mashava congratulated all the participants and further appreciated the efforts by school teachers and SAPS members for conducting a successful competition.
