ODAS NGOBENI STEPS IN AS THE NEW MAYOR OF GREATER TZANEEN MUNICIPALITY

TZANEEN | Council of Greater Tzaneen Municipality today elected Councillor Odas Ngobeni as the new Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality during a Special Council Sitting held today on Monday, 25 May 2026.
According to Neville Ndlala, the spokesperson of Greater Tzaneen Municipality, during the the sitting, a motion of no confidence against Councillor Gerson Molapisane was tabled before Council. The motion was duly moved and seconded and was subsequently adopted without a division of the house, as there were no objections from councillors present.
Following the adoption of the motion, Councillor Molapisane was removed from his positions as Mayor and member of the Executive Committee.
Council thereafter proceeded to appoint Councillor Odas Ngobeni to the Executive Committee, where he was first sworn in as a member of the Executive Committee before being sworn in as the new Mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality.
The oath of office was administered by Magistrate Mphaho. During the ceremony, Mayor Ngobeni pledged to be faithful to the Republic of South Africa, to obey, respect and uphold the Constitution and all laws of the Republic, and solemnly undertook to perform his duties as Mayor of the Greater Tzaneen Council to the best of his ability. Raising his right hand, he concluded the oath with the words, “So help me God,” before signing the official oath document.
Councillor Gerson Molapisane remains a PR Councillor in the Council of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. In a symbolic gesture marking the transition of leadership, the former Mayor and the newly elected Mayor shook hands and exchanged seats following the conclusion of the proceedings.
