NORTHAM: A joint intelligence tactical operation conducted at Northam policing area led to apprehension of a 27 year-old female suspect together with her 39 year-old boyfriend for possession of explosives and bribery on police on Saturday 28 February 2026.
The information obtained from the plice spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba indicate that the police operation comprised of the members of Thabazimbi Detectives Unit, Northam Detectives Unit together with the members of the Rustenburg Explosives Unit.
Ledwaba says the police received information about a female suspect who was in possession of explosives at Northam RDP Section. They reacted swiftly and rushed to the identified residence and found a 27 year-old female suspect and asked to search the house.
During the search, Rustenburg Explosives Unit discovered explosives and a 27 year-old female suspect was immediately placed under an arrest for possession of explosives.
The suspect revealed that the explosives belonged to her boyfriend who is employee at a local mine.
Following the arrest, a 39 year-old boyfriend approached the police with the intention to negotiate the release of his girlfriend. He promised to pay an amount of five thousand rands R5000,00 for the release of his girlfriend.

The couple is expected to appear before the Northam Magistrate court on Monday 02 March, 2026, facing a charge of possession of explosives and bribery on police.
