MASHITE VILLAGE: Police in Lebowakgomo are appealing to the public for assistance following the disappearance of a two-year-old boy in Mashite Village, Mahake Section, within the Capricorn District.
The missing child has been identified as Mokgethwa Makgoale (02).
It is alleged that on Monday, 05 January 2026, at about 11:00, the toddler was playing with a group of children, with the eldest child being seven years old. The children reportedly decided to go to the nearby mountains to collect wild fruit and allegedly instructed the toddler to return home as he was too young to accompany them. The child did not return home and has since disappeared.
The child’s grandmother only became aware of the situation when the other children returned home without her grandson. She immediately initiated a search with the assistance of community members and later reported the matter to the police.
Police launched an extensive search operation, which continued until late in the evening without success. The search resumed in the early hours of today, led by Lebowakgomo SAPS, with the support of the K9 Unit and members of the local community.
Police have intensified their efforts to locate the missing toddler and are urging anyone with information that may assist in tracing the child to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant Thabo Manthosi, on 074 492 0896, or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Information can also be reported at the nearest police station or via the MySAPS App.
Police investigations are continuing.
