The late Kabelo Maake lost his life at the age of 17 during a drowning incident in a local dam created during stone mining at Ga-Maupa at about 16h00 on Thursday, 05 February 2026.

He was a learner at Mmaba Secondary School. The school principal, Ma’am Lebopa NF, says that as a school, they have lost a learner with discipline and hope for a brighter future. She urged parents to take extra care of their children after school.
The class teacher, Ma’am Maake R, is appealing to the local municipality and contractors to close any pits created during construction projects to save lives. ‘We wouldn’t have these recent drowning incidents if contractors closed any holes created during their constructions.
We need service delivery, but also for our children to be safe. Both the Maake and Kgapane families say they were hopeful for the future.
