TURFLOOP | The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa in Limpopo, in partnership with the University of Limpopo, the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), and the Solay Foundation, hosted a Youth Dialogue on Local Governance and the 2026 Local Government Elections on Thursday, 14 May 2026, at the University of Limpopo, Turfloop Campus. The aim of the event was to help students better understand why their votes matter.
SRC President at the University of Limpopo, Comfort Komane, encouraged students to register and vote, stressing the importance of youth participation in elections. Panel members also emphasized that voting helps citizens hold leaders accountable and warned about the disadvantages of not taking part in elections.
The panelists included Mr. Mmakgabo Ramatlhodi, Assistant Manager for Civic and Democracy at the IEC; the Secretary General of the SRC at the University of Limpopo; Mr. Tiyani Rabothata, SALGA Limpopo Chairperson; and Prof. Nghamula Nkuna. The panel was facilitated by Mr. Mohale Ernest, a lecturer at the University of Limpopo.
The IEC voter education drama group performed an educational drama that helped students understand local government elections, ballots, and government structures clearly.
The main speaker Prof. Sipho Mokoena urged young people to register and vote, saying they have the power to influence change in their communities through the ballot box on 04 November 2026. The programme concluded with a civic pledge, where students were encouraged to commit to democratic participation and voter engagement.
