24-YEAR-OLD MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS DIRECT IMPRISONMENT FOLLOWING A MURDER INCIDENT AT A LOCAL TAVERN

GIYANI – The Giyani Regional Court has convicted and sentenced 24-year-old Thulani Jeffery Maluleke of Dzingidzingi Village to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of 26-year-old Hlulani Ngoveni.
The court heard that on Saturday, 20 November 2021, the victim was socialising with friends at a local tavern in Dzingidzingi Village when the accused approached the group and requested to join them for drinks.
After the victim declined the request, he and his companions left for another tavern in Homu 14C. The accused forced his way into their transport and accompanied them. The group later proceeded to another tavern at Risinga View, where they remained until the early hours of Sunday morning.
While travelling to the taxi rank, an argument reportedly broke out between the victim and the accused. During the altercation, the accused stabbed the victim in the neck with a sharp object.
The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he was certified dead upon arrival.
Police were immediately alerted to the incident, and the murder investigation was assigned to Detective Captain Adam Hobyani. Through diligent investigation and tireless efforts, the investigating officer successfully traced and arrested the suspect at his hiding place.
The accused made several appearances before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail of R2,000. The matter was later transferred to the Giyani Regional Court for trial.
After considering all the evidence presented, the Giyani Regional Court found Thulani Jeffery Maluleke guilty of murder on Friday, 19 June 2026, and sentenced him to 15 years’ direct imprisonment.
