MAYOR ODAS NGOBENI CONDUCTS MONITORING VISITS TO LOCAL SPAZA SHOPS IN RURAL VILLAGES

NWAMITWA AND XIHOKO | Greater Tzaneen Municipality Mayor, Cllr Odas Ngobeni, led monitoring visits to local spaza shops in Mavele village, Runnymede village and Xihoko villages today on Friday, 24 July 2026.

The operation was conducted together with municipal officials, members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Traffic Officers.

The purpose of the operation was to verify whether spaza shops are operating legally and complying with health, safety and business regulations. During the inspections, eight spaza shops were visited and were closed due to noncompliance, expired food products were confiscated from certain foreign-owned spaza shops after they were found to be unfit for consumption.

The monitoring exercise forms part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to ensure that all businesses are properly registered and comply with legal requirements governing spaza shops in South Africa.

The business owners found to be operating illegally or violating applicable laws may face enforcement action, including arrest where warranted.

The municipality reiterated that protecting public health remains a top priority by ensuring residents have access to safe and healthy food products. It further stated that compliance inspections will continue across the municipality to promote lawful business operations and safeguard consumers.
