MDM COMMEMORATES NELSON MANDELA DAY WITH 67 MINUTES OF SERVICE

BELLEVIEW VILLAGE | The Mopani District Municipality (MDM) commemorated Nelson Mandela Day by dedicating 67 minutes of community service at the Banareng Disability Centre in Belleview Village on Friday, 17 July 2026.

The programme was led by the Acting Executive Mayor of MDM, Cllr Lucky Mohlala, on behalf of the Executive Mayor, Cllr Pule Shayi. The municipality joined staff, community members and beneficiaries of the centre in honouring the legacy of the late former President, Nelson Mandela, through acts of kindness and community service.

The event was also graced by the Chief Whip of Council of Greater Letaba Municipality, the Speaker of the Greater Letaba Municipal Council and the Speaker of the Mopani District Municipal Council, who joined municipal officials, community members and beneficiaries in observing the significance of Nelson Mandela Day.

The initiative forms part of the annual Nelson Mandela Day campaign, which encourages individuals and organisations to dedicate at least 67 minutes to making a positive difference in the lives of others. This year’s programme focused on supporting people living with disabilities while recognising their dignity, rights and valuable contribution to society.

As part of the day’s activities, the municipality donated seedlings and paint for the centre’s roof and walls. Municipal leaders, councillors and officials also participated in painting the walls of the centre and plant seedlings alongside the beneficiaries. The seedlings will contribute to the centre’s food garden, which serves as an important source of livelihood and helps sustain the centre’s day-to-day operations.

The initiative reflects the municipality’s commitment to improving the living environment of vulnerable members of the community while promoting the values of compassion, equality and ubuntu that Nelson Mandela championed throughout his life.

Community members were encouraged to continue supporting disability centres and other charitable organisations beyond Nelson Mandela Day, ensuring that the spirit of giving, volunteerism and community service continues throughout the year.
