SOUTH AFRICA | The United African Transformation (UAT) criticised president Cyril Ramaphosa ‘s national address following the constitutional court judgement related to the Phala Phala matter, saying the president appeared politically and morally pressured.
According to the statement released by UAT Head of Communication, Doer Tsakane Manganyi ,it said while President Ramaphosa showed respect for the constitutional court and the rule of law, his criticism of the independent panel processes raised a concerns about effort to take accountability and democratic oversight.
” At a moment when South Africans expected humility, accountability, and decisive leadership, the president instead projected a determination to politically defend his position despite the seriousness of the matter before the nation,” the statement by Doer Tsakane Manganyi, UAT Head of Communications read.
UAT said the issue has now become bigger than the president Ramaphosa as an Individual and has evolved into a national test of constitutional accountability, ethical leadership, and the integrity of the presidency. The party also questioned the president’s refusal to consider stepping aside amid growing public concern. UAT maintained that no individual should be above scrutiny in a constitutional state founded on transparency and the rule of the law
UAT concluded by saying history would judge the current moment not by political speeches, but by whether South Africa’s democratic institutions remained strong enough to hold power accountable.
