KHETLHAKONE VILLAGE | The Provincial and Regional Leadership of the African National Congress (ANC) today on Tuesday, 23 June 2026 returned to the Modjadji Headkraal in Khetlhakone village to provide feedback to the Balobedu Royal Nation following the engagement held on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.
The ANC Provincial Chairperson and Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba and ANC leaders said they came back to show respect to the Balobedu nation and to respond to the issues that had been raised by community and traditional leaders.
The Premier acknowledged concerns about poor conditions at traditional offices and the lack of official stamps. She said an administrator will be appointed to assist in improving services and providing support to the people.
On the issue of Dikoma (initiation schools), the Premier said community members have the right to appeal to MEC or Premier and that the proper approval processes must be followed. She said initiation schools will not continue until the coronation of the Queen, while an appeal has been submitted to help find a lasting solution. A decision has also been taken to revoke Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) and not issue licences for initiation schools in an effort to promote unity.
The meeting also discussed service delivery matters. The Premier announced that the construction of the multipurpose centre can begin at any time to improve services for the community.
Road infrastructure was also addressed. Government will continue with road maintenance, including patching potholes and repairing roads in affected areas. Maintenance work on the road from Kgapane to Mamphakhathi will also be completed.
The issue of headmen and senior traditional leaders was also discussed. The Premier said 25 headmen had previously been recognised, but challenges remain regarding the appointment of headmen and issues within the Royal Council and traditional leadership structures.
Government will work with senior traditional leaders and return within two months to provide feedback.
Dr Phophi Ramathuba called on community members to follow the law and consult the correct leadership structures when raising concerns. She also asked for patience, time and cooperation from the people as government works to address the issues facing the Balobedu nation.
Our reporters Karabo Moloisi and Elsie Makhubele attended the meeting.
