LEBOWAKGOMO | A 13-year-old learner from Saint Francis Catholic Academy died on Wednesday morning after a minibus collided with a truck on the R597 near Ngoato Tlou High School in Sepanapudi, Lebowakgomo Road.
The Limpopo Department of Education spokesperson, Mr Mike Maringa, has confirmed the accident involved a Toyota Quantum minibus and a Hino truck. Preliminary reports indicate the minibus driver was changing lanes to avoid a pedestrian when the crash occurred.
Fourteen people were injured, including the drivers of both vehicles. Eleven learners were taken to Lebowakgomo Hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.
MEC for Education in Limpopo, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, expressed condolences to the family and school community. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a young life in this tragic accident. “While we are relieved that the injured learners have been discharged from hospital, our thoughts remain with all those affected by this tragedy. We wish the learners a speedy recovery and urge all road users to exercise caution and prioritise road safety at all times.” said MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya
The Department said it remains in contact with the affected schools, the bereaved family, and relevant authorities, and will continue to provide support to learners, educators, and others affected.
